Chassahowitzka Mitigation Bank

403.30 Acres | Hernando County

Project Details

The Chassahowitzka Mitigation Bank is a 403.30-acre conservation area established to provide compensatory mitigation for wetland impacts in the Upper Coastal Basin. The Bank consists of wetland forested mixed palustrine forested wetlands at the lowest elevations with slash pine swamp forest and wet pine flatwoods fragments in the higher areas and upland scrub habitats. The Bank has been degraded by selective pine, cypress, and red cedar logging, exotic species invasion, hydrologic alteration due to the construction of historic logging roads, and prolonged fire suppression, resulting in significantly degraded wetland habitats. The restoration of the Bank will consist of shrub and tree thinning, exotic species eradication, supplemental planting, and reintroduction of the prescribed fire to restore all the wetland and upland buffer habitats to optimal condition.

The Chassahowitzka Mitigation Bank will have palustrine forested credits available approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). The Chassahowitzka Mitigation Bank will also have freshwater forested credits available approved by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). The Mitigation Service Area is in the Upper Coastal Watershed.
