Crystal Cove Mitigation Bank

220 Acres | Citrus County

Project Details

The Crystal Cove Mitigation Bank is a 220.00 acres conservation area in the process of being established to provide compensatory mitigation for wetland impacts located in the Upper Coastal Drainage basin (State). The bank consists of a mixture of degraded natural forested wetlands and upland habitats, where the habitats have been logged for cypress, red cedar, and long leaf pine trees; overgrown with oaks; and planted with slash pine trees.  In general, the site consists of forested cypress slough wetlands at the lowest elevations with forested wet pine flatwood perimeters and upland scrubby flatwoods habitat in the higher areas; most areas of these habitats have been logged and planted with slash pine plantation. The entire site is currently degraded by selective pine, cypress, and red cedar logging, pine plantation, inappropriate vegetation due to lack of fire, and hydrologic impacts due to the construction of dirt roads, and the overabundance of pine and oaks trees. The restoration of the Bank will consist of cessation of silvicultural activities, removal of exotics, thinning of pine and oak trees and shrubs, the reintroduction of prescribed fire, lowering the elevation of disturbed upland pine plantation to match adjacent natural wet flatwoods, and planting native vegetation.

The Crystal Cove Mitigation Bank will have palustrine forested credits available approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). The Crystal Cove Mitigation Bank will also have freshwater forested credits available approved by Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD).
