BANKS
Shep’s Island Mitigation Bank
673.30 Acres | Sarasota County
Project Details
The Shep’s Island Mitigation Bank is a 673.30-acre conservation area being established to provide compensatory mitigation for wetland impacts located in the Myakka Basin. The Bank consists of a mixture of degraded natural forested and emergent wetlands and altered upland buffers. The Bank is currently degraded by exempt agricultural clearing for pasture establishment, lack of fire and nuisance and exotic vegetation invasion.
The restoration of the Bank will consist of the cessation of all agricultural activities; restoration of emergent and forested wetlands through nuisance exotic treatment and management; reintroduction of fire in the wet prairie wetlands; and nuisance exotic treatment and management in the upland buffers.
Shep’s Island Mitigation Bank will have palustrine forested and palustrine emergent credits available approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps). The Mitigation Bank will also have freshwater forested and freshwater herbaceous credits available approved by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).
